gifting trips

Twice per academic school year JamReads visits our schools in Jamaica to take supplies from our "packed for success"  program to the children. 

This is what we refer to as a "Gifting Trip".

These trips are very rewarding and gives donors, board, staff, and volunteers the opportunity to visit those we work with as well as  experience Jamaica.   

September 

International Literacy Day- September 8th
Our first gifting trip of the year takes place in September around International Literacy Day.  Our goal during September gifting is to make starting school easier.  Children not only need supplies at school, but at home as well. Without school supplies children are not prepared for learning.  

During school visits children receive:

• Backpack or reusable canvas bag
• Reading books
• Basic school supplies (pencils, paper, glue, rulers, crayons, etc)
• A new dental kit (toothbrush, toothpaste, etc)
• And a snack

Spring

Our second trip takes place in the Spring. Usually in March. The purpose of this trip is to get the children ready for the summer months.  We know that during the summer months children experience a decline in the material retained from the previous school year.  We aim to help decrease the summer slide by giving children access to books at home. 

 During school visits on this trip the children receive: 

• 2 reading books
• A coloring/activity book (depending on inventory) 
• Crayons
• A new dental kit (toothbrush, toothpaste, etc)
• And a snack
